What should you do while you’re driving or riding along a motorway?

Look much further ahead than you would on other roads – Motorway traffic is typically faster than traffic on other roads. As a result, you should be looking further ahead to give yourself more time to react to any hazards that may arise.

When overtaking, it is extremely vital to look ahead. When overtaking, consider the following:

  • the state of the road
  • what the vehicle your overtaking is doing
  • any dangers and hazards

If another car is poised to overtake you, don’t start overtaking.

Check behind you again to reassess the situation; keep an eye out for motorcyclists, who can come up quickly.

If it’s safe, shift lanes by gradually moving across to the right lane and overtaking quickly. Before moving back to the left, make sure you’re well clear of the vehicle you’ve overtaken. Don’t get cut in.
