How will a police officer in a patrol vehicle signal for you to stop?

Flash the headlights, indicate left and point to the left – You must obey the police’s signals. If a police officer in a patrol vehicle requests that you pull over, they will do so without endangering you or other drivers.

One of the only reasons to stop on a motorway is when asked to do so by traffic officers, the police, or the DVSA.

Stopping on a motorway

If you have to slow down or stop on the highway, turn on your hazard warning lights to alert cars behind you.

Turn them off once you’re certain they’ve been seen.

Powers of traffic officers

Traffic officers, unlike police officers, do not have enforcement powers. They can, however, stop and direct anyone travelling on the highway.

It is a crime to refuse to obey a traffic officer’s instructions (refer to The Highway Code, rules 107 and 108).
