Why do motorcyclists often look round over their right shoulder just before turning right?

To check for traffic in their blind area – A sign that a motorcyclist is about to change their direction is when they look over their shoulder.

Identifying a clue like this allows you to predict their next move. This can help you and others stay safe on the road.

Keep an eye out for motorbikes and scooters with L plates. Riders of these bikes may be riding on the road with little experience or even for the first time, making them particularly vulnerable.

Top tips

Windy conditions have a significant impact on motorcycle riders; they can be blown into your path, so:

  • Allow extra space if you’re passing a motorcycle.
  • Keep a safe distance behind a motorcycle that is overtaking a high-sided vehicle, as they may be blown off course.
  • You should be especially cautious where there are sidewind warning signs.
