After a collision, someone is unconscious in their vehicle. When should you call the emergency services?

Being near a collision can be a scary experience. But being prepared can save lives.

If someone is unconscious, call the emergency services as soon as possible. It is critical that the emergency services respond as quickly as possible. When a person is unconscious, they may sustain serious injuries that are not immediately apparent.

Place an adult or child on their side in the recovery position if they are unconscious and breathing but otherwise unharmed (as shown below).

  • Begin by placing the casualty on their back and sitting or crouching to one side of them.
  • Straighten out the arm closest to you, at a right angle to their body.
  • Roll them onto their side and face you.
  • Place the casualty’s second arm, palm upwards, between the ground and the casualty’s cheek.
