You’re following a long vehicle as it approaches a crossroads. What should you do if it signals left but moves out to the right?
Long vehicles can be a pain on roads, but you need to be able to respect them no matter what the situation. If they signal left and move to the right, you need to respond appropriately
You should stay well back and give it room. When approaching a bend, a long vehicle may need to swing out in the opposite direction to allow the rear wheels to clear the kerb. If you notice a gap, don’t try to squeeze in; the gap will shut as the lorry turns.
Long vehicles on roundabouts
Long vehicles, due to their length, may take an alternative route or straddle lanes as they approach and circle the roundabout. Keep an eye out for their signals and allow for the direction the back of their vehicle takes.
Dealing with long vehicles if you’re a cyclist
If you’re a cyclist, keep an eye out for long cars that require a lot of space to manoeuvre around turns. Keep in mind that drivers may not see you.
They might need to move to the right before turning left. Wait until they’ve finished the manoeuvre because the rear wheels come dangerously close to the kerb when turning. Don’t be tempted to ride between them and the kerb.
