Emerging from a side road

You’re waiting to come out of a side road. Why should you look carefully for motorcycles?

It’s always hard to notice motorcyclists on the road. But, in some cases, you need to be extra careful to avoid an accident.

When coming out of a side road, motorcycles can easily be hidden behind obstructions. This is why you must look carefully for them. Be especially careful if there are parked cars or other objects in your path.

Motorcyclists are particularly susceptible at intersections. Keep an eye out for them:

  • Coming from behind as you approach the junction.
  • Travelling along the roadway you’re joining, as they can be difficult to spot and gauge their speed and distance.

Bends and hills may make it more difficult to observe approaching automobiles. If a vehicle approaching from the right is signalling to turn left into your road, wait until you are certain the vehicle is turning and not simply pulling up on the left beyond your road.

What is emerging?

Emerging is when a vehicle leaves a minor road to join, cross, or turn onto a major route. You’ll need to gauge the speed and distance of any traffic on the road you’re joining or crossing, and only emerge when it’s safe.

This necessitates caution and, at times, patience. Examine the intersection. Use the MSM/PSL routine to check road signs and markings.
