What should you do if the traffic in the left-hand lane is slowing when the right-hand lane is closed?

Traffic is stressful and a waste of time. Nobody likes getting stuck in traffic. But, dealing with traffic is an important part of driving.

If there is no right-hand lane traffic on the left, slow down keep a safe separation distance and allow traffic to merge into the far left lane. Make sure to give enough space to maintain a safe separation gap even if a vehicle drives ahead of you. Also, obey all road signs.

If lanes are restricted or narrowed due to roadwork, obey temporary road signs and change into the correct lane as soon as possible.

  • Don’t jeopardise your safety margin by reacting at the last minute.
  • Don’t overtake and squeeze in later — you’ll just aggravate the drivers who are already waiting.
